I swore by canned beans until my roommate's slow cooker experiment

We had $15 for groceries last Friday and I was set to buy six cans of black beans, but she showed me a bag of dry beans for $1.89 and said we could cook them overnight. I gave in, and the next day we had enough beans for three meals that tasted way better than the canned stuff. Anyone have other cheap dry goods that beat the canned version?
