Dropped $40 on a digital scale and my bread finally turned out right
I kept getting flat dense loaves for months. I was using measuring cups and guessing on flour amounts. Finally bought a cheap digital scale from Target for $40 and weighed everything exactly. First loaf came out perfect with a good rise and soft crumb. Has anyone else had a similar experience where a simple tool fixed their baking?

I guess if spending $40 on a scale is what it takes to make a decent loaf, then fine. But baking bread has been done for centuries without digital scales measuring out every last gram. My grandmother never weighed a thing in her life and her bread was always perfect. People used their hands, their eyes, and some basic common sense. It feels like a lot of fuss over something that should just come with practice. Maybe the problem wasn't the measuring cups, maybe it was the recipe or the technique.

Your grandma probably used a coffee cup or a handful as her measure though, @jesse988.
