Just realized I was overwatering my pothos for 8 months

I nearly killed my pothos that I've had since last winter. The leaves kept turning yellow and dropping off no matter what I did. Last week I pulled it out of the pot and the roots were all mushy and brown. A guy at my local nursery in Portland told me I was watering it twice a week when it really only needs once every two weeks. The soil was staying wet the whole time and rotting the roots out. I trimmed off the dead roots and repotted it in fresh soil. Anyone else make this same mistake with houseplants or have tips for reading the soil better?

Maybe the soil was too wet. Ferns hate that.
