Just realized half the people at the plant swap call a Monstera a 'split-leaf philodendron' and it drives me nuts.
I was at the swap in Portland yesterday and heard it from four different people, which matters because they're totally different genera and need different care, so has anyone else run into this mix-up and how do you politely correct it?

At the Seattle garden show last month I counted seven vendors using the wrong name. I just point to the leaves and say the real philodendron doesn't have those big holes, only splits, so it's a Monstera. People usually get it when they see the difference. It helps to show them instead of just telling them.

Yeah, the "split-leaf philodendron" thing is a real pet peeve. I usually just say something like, "Oh, I've heard that too, but it's actually a Monstera deliciosa. They like a bit more light than a true philodendron." It frames it as a common mix-up, not a correction. Most people just nod and move on.
