The bookbinder in Portland showed me her 40 year old bone folder and I finally got why mine kept cracking
She pulled it out at a workshop on Alberta St and it was dark brown and smooth as glass from decades of use. Mine was 6 months old and already flaking, so what am I doing wrong with my bone folders?

Your bone folder is not the problem here, you just bought a cheap one. Those flaking ones are pressed from junk cattle bone that wasn't aged right, so the layers split apart the second they dry out. The Portland lady's folder isn't magic, it's just real bone that got worked soft over thousands of folds and picked up skin oil the whole time. A six month old folder should not be flaking unless it was bad from the start, so blaming your method makes no sense. Truth is half the folders sold online today are horn or resin fakes dressed up to look like bone, and those will always break down no matter how gentle you are. So keep your hands clean, stop soaking it, and buy from someone who actually tells you where the bone came from.
