PSA: lost a customer's 1846 family bible at the Chicago Print and Bind show because my thread knot slipped, now I wax every knot twice
I was showing a buyer how fast I could sew a signature and the knot let go right in my hands, and while I laughed it off then, I have not tied a single knot without double waxing since that Saturday, so does anyone else have a show floor disaster that changed one small habit forever?
Double waxing the knot is smart but you also want to check the twist direction on your thread. I had a spool of 18/3 linen that was twisted the wrong way for my normal knot and it slipped every time until a guy at the bindery in Ann Arbor showed me the trick of reversing the loop. Now I test every new spool with a quick yank before I sew a single signature. Wax twice, reverse the twist when needed, and that knot will not move.
