PSA: our club almost fell apart over one member's 'feedback' on how I run discussion, 9 people left
So I've been running our Tuesday night book club out of the back room at a bar in Portland for about 4 years now, usually 12 to 15 people show up. Back in March, one of the founding members, Dana, pulled me aside after we wrapped and said my discussion questions were leading everyone to the same answer, and that people felt like they were being quizzed instead of talked to. I got a little defensive at first but she was right, I was basically handing out a worksheet and asking people to fill it in. The next month I tried something different and just asked one open thing like 'what stuck with you' and let it go wherever it went. Here is the thing though, two other members hated the change and said the meetings felt aimless and they stopped coming after our May pick, and we lost 9 people total over the summer before it settled down. Now we hover around 8 regulars and honestly the talks are way better, but I keep wondering if I overcorrected and drove off the people who liked some structure. Do any other club leaders have a format that keeps both the free talkers and the structure people happy, or am I stuck picking one side?
