Our book club nearly fell apart over the ending of 'The Silent Patient'

We were meeting at Beth's house in Portland, about eight of us, and the debate over the twist ending got way too heated. One member, Sarah, called the book a cheap trick and said anyone who liked it had bad taste. Another person, Mark, got really quiet and looked hurt because he loved it. The room just froze for like a full minute. I jumped in and said, 'Okay, but what if the twist works because it makes you question the narrator from page one?' I tried to steer us back to talking about the writing itself, not personal attacks. It calmed things down a bit, and we agreed to pick a lighter book next month. Has anyone else had a meeting get that personal over a plot point? How do you handle it?

Did you ever find out why Mark took that comment so personally?

Used to think book clubs were just about finding hidden meanings in the text. Then I saw a fight break out over whether a character's actions were believable, and it got weirdly personal, like people were defending their own life choices. Now I see it's more about how a story hits everyone differently, and sometimes you just have to agree the book made you feel some type of way.
