A guy at my book club said the main character in Pachinko was 'whiny' and 3 of us just stared at him
We were at Priya's place on Sunday talking about Pachinko and this guy Dan kept calling Sunja whiny for not standing up to her family. I asked him what he would have done in 1930s Korea as a woman with no money and he just went quiet. Then Priya said her own grandma made almost the same choices, and Dan actually apologized and said he never thought about it that way. It was weirdly the best moment our club has had in a long time. How do you all handle it when someone in the group totally misses the point of a book?
Ha, sounds like Dan just needed a little pushback to get it, but honestly sometimes people read books for fun and not to unpack every social thing. If we grill everyone who has a hot take, nobody shows up to book club anymore.
