Tried a different bevel prep on a boiler tube and it backfired bad

Did you use a bevel angle that's too steep on a thin tube wall? I've seen that mistake cause the weld puddle to just fall right through, especially on smaller diameter tubes. Maybe try dialing back the angle by a few degrees and see if that helps with your root pass.

A buddy of mine tried something similar on a job last year. He was running a root pass on some 2-inch schedule 40 tube and figured a steeper bevel would let him get better penetration. Well, he ended up burning through the backside on about three joints in a row. The weld puddle just dripped right out like honey off a spoon. He swore he'd never mess with the standard prep again after that.
