Took me 4 hours to realize my game group was playing Brass wrong the whole time

We kept wondering why Birmingham felt so broken after 6 plays, turned out we were scoring coal and iron like income every round instead of just once at the end.

Man that sucks, those types of rules are easy to miss when theyre buried in the manual. Once you get used to playing it the right way the whole economy flips and coal suddenly becomes a real fight instead of just free money every round. Your group probably had crazy scores and nobody could figure out why the market never moved.

The real hidden killer is that playing Brass wrong this way actually ruins the timing of the whole game for everyone. If you're scoring coal and iron every round, nobody ever feels that pinch where you have to decide between building a coal mine now or waiting for the market to flip. Your group probably never experienced that beautiful moment (and it really is beautiful) where someone builds a railroad at exactly the right second and the coal price jumps from 4 to 8, screwing over the guy who just spent his whole turn setting up a cotton mill. Those delayed payouts are what make the market feel alive and cutthroat instead of just a flat loop of free money.
