Ending up as the calm voice during our group's heated moments

Last weekend, at our regular tabletop meetup, a disagreement broke out about how to score points. I mean, I was kinda nervous, but I tried to listen to both sides and suggest a compromise. Idk, it felt like I picked up a real skill in keeping things chill. Maybe it's just me, but has anyone else had to learn how to settle arguments in their group?

Worry that being the calm voice sometimes means avoiding the real problem. Saw a guy in my old group do this, and it just let the same arguments come back every session. Felt like he was more about keeping peace than fixing anything. Ever notice how smoothing things over can make the tension worse later?

Peacekeeping just means you're good at hiding the bodies.

In my old D&D group two years ago, I earned the nickname 'The Avoidance Queen' for how I handled fights. Your post @nathanr87 totally reminds me of that! I was so proud of keeping peace that I didn't see I was just putting a lid on a boiling pot. It meant the same stupid arguments about rule calls came back every single game night. I learned the hard way that smoothing things over without fixing the root issue just stores up drama for later. Now I try to be calm but also push for real talk, even if it gets messy for a bit.
