Started episode 4 of a 6 season show at 11pm on a work night, biggest mistake this year
I was on my couch in Omaha with the remote in one hand and a bowl of cereal in the other, telling myself one more episode, and next thing I knew it was 4:30am and my alarm was going off in 90 minutes. I made it through 9 episodes and dragged myself through two meetings the next day like a zombie, so now I set a hard rule of no starting new shows past 9pm. Has anyone else had a show completely wreck their sleep schedule, and did it ever get better or do you just accept the damage?
Oh man, the "one more episode" trap is real and it always wins. What gets me is how the show makers know exactly where to cut each episode so you can't stop. They end on some cliffhanger and your brain won't let you sleep until you know what happens next, so it's not even fully your fault. I went through the same thing with a long series a couple years back and lost about a week of decent sleep before I finally pulled the plug. My rule now is no new episodes after 9pm unless it's a show I've already seen, because rewatching doesn't hook me the same way. The damage does heal once you break the streak, but you have to break it on purpose.
