My brother told me to skip the first season of 'The Wire' and I'm still mad about it.
He said it was 'too slow' and to just read a summary online, but starting with season 2 made the whole show feel confusing and disconnected for me, so has anyone else gotten bad advice on where to start a series?

That is honestly the worst advice for that show. Season one sets up the whole world and the rules everyone plays by. Skipping it means you miss why any of the characters act the way they do later. My friend tried to get me to start a different show in season three and it was a mess, just a bunch of names with no faces or reasons. Now I just ignore anyone who says to jump into the middle of a story.

But what if the first season is just badly made? I've seen shows where the pilot is rough and it turns people off the whole series. Sometimes you gotta skip ahead to the good stuff to even give it a chance.
