Downtown detour forced me into traffic for 3 blocks, honestly the bike lane was the safer option
Last Tuesday on 5th Street they closed the protected lane for utility work and the detour signs led me right into a bus lane, so I doubled back and took the sidewalk even though it's technically illegal, has anyone else just ignored the detour and gone with the riskier route?

Forgot how much I used to defend following detour signs no matter what, but last month one sent me onto a cracked asphalt stretch that nearly threw me off my bike. Ever since then I've been way more willing to break the rules if the official route feels more dangerous. That sidewalk call you made was probably the smartest move even if it's illegal, because a ticket is way less scary than getting clipped by a bus. I also think those utility crews have zero clue how their closures mess with cyclists, they just see a street and not the people trying to survive on it. Did you report that detour to the city or just let it slide?
