Heads up on aluminum bolt failures in stem assemblies

During a routine adjustment, I had an aluminum stem bolt fail under load. It cracked without warning while the customer was test riding. Luckily, no one was hurt, but it could have been bad. Inspect for hairline cracks and replace bolts at the first sign of wear.

Terrifying incident. Glad no one got hurt. Inspect and replace bolts early.

What gets me is how often we ignore little warning signs until something big happens. Like that weird noise your car makes for months before the belt snaps, or the frayed cord on the kitchen appliance you keep using. We all treat minor wear and tear like it's not urgent, but it's literally the stuff holding things together. This bolt thing is just the most dramatic version of a daily habit.
