Tried a new razor technique on a guy with a tough beard in Austin

I was working on a client last week who had a really coarse, curly beard, so I decided to try a three-pass shave with a straight razor using a different angle on the second pass. I learned the hard way that going against the grain on that hair type without enough prep caused some serious irritation, even with my usual pre-shave oil. Has anyone in a dry climate like Texas found a better method for super thick beards?

Yeah, the three-pass idea is solid but that second pass against the grain is the killer on curly hair. I've seen a lot of folks in dry areas skip the against-the-grain pass completely for guys with beards like that. The hair can curl back into the skin way too easy. Maybe try just two passes with the grain and across it, and see if that gets you close enough without the burn.

Skipping that against the grain pass saved my skin too.
