I killed 5 basil plants in pots before switching to fabric grow bags, and the difference shocked me
For two years I grew everything in those cheap plastic pots from the dollar store and my basil always turned yellow and died within about a month. I watered them the same way, same soil, same spot on my south facing balcony in Phoenix, so I blamed myself for having a black thumb. Then my neighbor told me my plants were drowning because plastic holds water at the bottom and the roots rot. I grabbed a 3 pack of 5 gallon fabric pots for 15 bucks, filled them with the same mix, and my new basil has been going strong for 4 months now with leaves bigger than my hand. The fabric lets air hit the roots and extra water drains right out, so I actually water more often now and the plants love it. If your balcony gets hot afternoon sun like mine, those thin plastic pots are basically baking the roots too. Has anyone else made the swap, and do the fabric bags dry out too fast for you in July?
Man, this is the same thing that happened to me with herbs and honestly it's the same story everywhere, cheap pots cut corners and we blame ourselves. It's like how a bad pair of shoes makes you think your feet are the problem. Once you fix the actual thing, turns out you were fine all along.
