Can we talk about how long it took me to figure out my balcony tomatoes were getting baked by the wall?
I have a south facing balcony in Phoenix and my cherry tomatoes kept dying every July no matter how much I watered them, and it took me almost two full summers to figure out why. I finally stuck a thermometer against the wall behind the pots on a random Tuesday and it read 128 degrees at 3pm, so the plants were basically getting roasted from the back while I was busy blaming the soil and the fertilizer. Moving everything two feet away from the wall and adding a cheap bamboo screen dropped that surface temp by almost 30 degrees and suddenly I had more tomatoes than I knew what to do with. I felt so dumb because the fix cost me like $14 at the hardware store and I had already killed six plants over two years trying everything else. Has anyone else dealt with the wall heat thing, and did a shade cloth actually help or did it just block too much sun?
