My sourdough starter survived a 2 week vacation, but died at my sister's house in Portland
I left it with her and gave clear instructions to feed it daily, but she used tap water instead of filtered and now it smells like acetone. Do you think it's the chlorine killing the culture, or is something else in her water causing this?

Hold on, "used tap water instead of filtered" is wild to me. Like, that's literally the first rule of sourdome, everyone knows that. I mean, I've left mine with my mom for a week and she used bottled water without even asking, and it was fine. But acetone smell? That's not just chlorine, that's a full-on bacterial tantrum. Maybe the chlorine shocked it and the culture just gave up, but also, could be the mineral content or even the temperature in her kitchen. Idk, I'd tell her to switch to filtered and feed it a few extra times, see if it perks up.
