Unpopular opinion: I stopped planning detailed routes after getting lost near Mount Rogers
Got turned around on a foggy ridge near Mount Rogers in Virginia back in October. My 11 mile day turned into 16 because I kept second guessing the map instead of just walking. Now I plan a rough corridor and leave the rest loose. Anyone else ditch the mile by mile itineraries once they actually hit trail?
Ugh, I felt this in my soul. I read a trip report once where a guy said the same thing, that the more he zoomed into every turn on his phone the more he panicked when the trail did not match. A rough line on the map plus a good sense of which way the road runs beats a perfect plan every time.
