Serious question, did the Sierra High Route used to feel this crowded, or did I just get slower at 41?

Did a 6 day stretch from Tuolumne to Reds Meadow last week and passed 22 people in one afternoon near Donohue Pass, when I first hiked it in 2011 I saw maybe 3 groups the whole trip, so is this just how it is now or did I pick the worst week ever?
