A ranger in Yosemite told me my Zion route plan was dangerous, and I'm still not sure I agree
Two months ago I was planning a 3 day trip through The Narrows and mentioned it to a backcountry ranger at the Tuolumne station while getting a wilderness permit for a different trip. He said going top down solo in early June without checking flow rates first was a bad call, and honestly I brushed it off thinking he was just being cautious. But then I looked up the gauge data and saw the Virgin River was running at 400 cfs that week, which is way above the 150 cfs limit for most people. I switched to a bottom up day hike instead and felt kind of silly about the whole thing. Now I check the USGS flow gauge before every slot canyon trip, even ones I've done before. Anyone else had a ranger talk them out of a route they were set on, and were they right?
