Watched a guy at a Portland Cars & Coffee diagnose a misfire with a $12 scan tool and a garden hose
So last Saturday I went to the Cars & Coffee meet at the World Trade Center parking lot in Portland. This older guy with a beat up 2004 Silverado is parked next to me, popping his hood every ten minutes. Turns out he had a random misfire code and three shops quoted him $600 to $900 for new coils and plugs. He pulls out a $12 Bluetooth scanner from Amazon and a spray bottle filled with water. He starts misting the coil packs while the truck idles, and we all watch the water dance on cylinder 4. Bad coil, 20 minute fix, $45 part at the auto parts store down the street. I stood there feeling dumb because I paid a shop $300 last winter for the exact same job on my old Ranger. Anyone else learn a trick like that from a random parking lot guy?
