Got yelled at by a shop foreman in Phoenix for using a pickle fork on ball joints

I was out at a fleet yard in Phoenix last summer and this old timer stopped me mid-swing, said I was destroying the boots before they even got installed. He showed me a trick with hammer blows on the knuckle instead, has anyone else stopped using pickle forks altogether?

Hammer trick works great but it's way harder on your hands than a fork.

Nah, hammer gives way more control and you don't bend the prongs.
