A master tech said my diag process was 'guess and check' and it stung because he was right
About 4 months ago a master tech at our shop watched me throw parts at a misfire for two days before he stepped in. He pulled the freeze frame data, showed me the fuel trim was +28% at idle, and said 'you are guessing, not testing.' That one sentence reworked how I approach every drivability job now. I started writing down my test steps on a notepad before I touch a single bolt, and I pressure test fuel systems before I even think about plugs or coils. Last month I found a bad intake gasket in under an hour on a car two other guys had already replaced plugs, coils, and injectors on. Cost the customer about $80 in parts instead of the $600 parts cannon we almost fired. Anybody else have a mentor call out their process in a way that actually stuck?
