Rant: Why does every handyman in Atlanta charge $75 just to show up?
I called three different local services last week to fix a loose porch step and they all wanted a flat fee before even looking at it. My neighbor's kid does the same work for $20 and a slice of pizza.

Yeah @leo567 nailed it. The $75 is mostly covering their time and overhead, not just the actual fix. I've noticed this same pattern everywhere now, even my mechanic charges a flat $50 just to hook up the diagnostic tool and tell you what's wrong. It's like every trade decided they'd rather charge a base fee than waste a whole afternoon on someone who ends up saying "nah, I'll just let my neighbor's kid do it for pizza." The problem is that pizza deal is a total gamble, sometimes you get a solid fix and sometimes the step falls apart again in two weeks.
