My HVAC unit died in the middle of that heat wave last week

Last Tuesday my AC just stopped blowing cold air. Temp hit 98 that day and my house was getting up to 85 inside by noon. Called three different HVAC companies and the soonest anyone could come was Friday. Ended up being a bad capacitor, cost me $280 for the emergency service call and part. Has anyone else had to deal with surprise AC failures during peak summer down here?

That $280 for a capacitor is brutal... I had the exact same thing last July and they charged me $350 just to swap out a $20 part. Makes you wonder if these companies stock up on capacitors just to cash in on emergency calls during heat waves.

Laughing at myself here because I once paid $400 for a capacitor swap in August when my AC died. The guy showed up at 9pm, swapped it in five minutes, and handed me a bill that made my wallet cry. I just stood there like, "Cool, guess I'm eating ramen for the next two weeks." The heat makes you do dumb things, like agreeing to any number they say.
