Vent: A guy at the local star party said my camera was 'just collecting light, not seeing'

I was at the Green Bank star party last month, showing off a shot of the Orion Nebula. This older guy looked at my DSLR setup and said, 'You're just collecting light with that thing, you're not really seeing it.' At first I was annoyed, but he explained he meant I should try looking through an eyepiece first to understand the object. So I borrowed his 10 inch Dobsonian and spent 20 minutes just looking at M42. Going back to the camera after that, I framed my next shot completely differently, focusing on the core detail I'd seen. Has anyone else tried this 'look first, shoot later' method with a new target?

Tried that once and it changed my whole framing approach.

Found it made things way more complicated for me.
