Got a $7 kiwi at a farmers market in San Diego and the vendor told me why all my other ones were hard
I grabbed one at a stand near Ocean Beach and the guy running it said my mistake was picking the biggest ones. He said big kiwis are often picked early so they ship better, which is why they never get sweet on my counter. He handed me two small ones, about the size of a golf ball, and said to squeeze the ends, not the middle, because the middle stays firm even when they are ready. Two days on the counter next to a banana and they were perfect, way sweeter than the big ones I had been paying more for. Now I feel silly for judging fruit by size for so long. Does anyone else pick produce by looks and get burned like this?
