At a BBQ, I mentioned my job and regretted it instantly

I was at a neighborhood BBQ last weekend and someone asked what I do for work. I said I'm a plumber, and this guy launches into a story about his clogged toilet from last month. He described everything in way too much detail while we were all eating burgers. The table went quiet, and I could tell people were uncomfortable. It made me think about how some conversations just kill the mood. Now I'm careful about when to talk shop, especially around food. Social settings need a filter, for real.

What if he was just trying to relate to you? I know it was nasty at the table, but real job stories can be pretty funny! My delivery tales usually get people laughing when I share the silly mix-ups. Maybe you could flip the script next time with a cool fix you did, minus the messy parts.

Something I don't see talked about is how people sometimes only see the gross parts of a job, not the skill. That guy reduced your whole trade to his one nasty problem, which is kind of disrespectful. It's like asking a chef only about food poisoning. Maybe the real filter needed is for people to remember there's a whole person behind the job title, not just a free story for their dinner table.
