Unpopular opinion: a museum guard in Cairo taught me more about potsherds in 5 minutes than my 300 page textbook did
He picked up a 4,000 year old rim sherd, ran his thumb along the break, and said "feel how gritty that is, that's Nile silt, that's somebody's dinner plate," which made me realize I'd been memorizing dates for 6 months without ever once touching the actual clay, so has anyone else had a curator or guard change how they look at a collection?
