I thought the 'lost city' near my town was just a local legend
For years I rolled my eyes every time someone mentioned the supposed ancient settlement in the woods outside of Boone, North Carolina. Then last fall, a university team did a ground-penetrating radar survey and found clear rectangular foundations and pottery shards dated to around 1100 AD. I had to eat my words when they showed the scans at the local history center. Has anyone else had a local myth turn out to be surprisingly real?

Actually, I heard they found the pottery shards first, which is what made them do the radar scan (the foundations came later). Still, that's an amazing find for your town. Makes you wonder what other stories might be true.

My town's biggest find was a lost sock.
