Chatted with an old-timer at the supply yard yesterday and he said something that stuck with me
He told me I should be sharpening my chainsaw after every single tank of gas, not just when it starts smoking, and now I'm wondering how many hours I wasted fighting a dull chain over the last 5 years.

Figured that out the hard way myself a few years back. The old timers know their stuff though, a sharp chain cuts faster and safer, saves you all kinds of effort in the long run.

Funny you mention that @hart.taylor, I learned that lesson with a chain so dull it was practically a butter knife. Took me three hours to cut what should have been a twenty minute job, and my arms felt like noodles the next day. Now I watch those old guys who can sharpen a chain in their sleep, and I just nod along. They make it look easy, but my first try at filing turned a perfectly good chain into something that wouldn't cut warm butter. Bought a new one and finally asked for help, best decision I made.
