An old timer at the county fair said my pruning cuts were too close to the collar

He pulled me aside after the demo and said 'You're leaving a stub that'll rot back into the trunk, kid, give it a quarter inch.' I've been doing it his way for a year now and the healing looks way better. How do you judge that distance when you're up in a big maple?

Yeah, that quarter inch is a tough thing to eyeball from a weird angle (I always second-guess myself up there).
