Overheard a young guy call my cutterhead an old dinosaur today, got me thinking about how much simpler things were back when I started.

I was working on a 10 year old Whirlpool washer in a basement in Akron, and this kid from a local shop said my multimeter was outdated and handed me a smart clamp that connects to your phone. I mean, I figured it was just another gimmick, but it actually caught a bad capacitor in about 30 seconds that would've taken me 15 minutes of probing. Has anyone else switched over to those Bluetooth monitors or are you still sticking with the old analog stuff?

Those fancy Bluetooth gadgets are just another thing to break or lose connection when you need it most. Nothing beats the feel of a basic analog meter where you can see the needle jump and know exactly what's happening without some app crashing. Plus those smart clamps need batteries charged and software updates which is just more hassle when you're already elbow deep in a wet basement. My old Fluke from 1987 still works perfect, never needed to pair it with anything but my own two eyes and hands. You really trust your phone not to die on you halfway through a diagnostic?
