My dad told me to never trust the 'auto defrost' light on a 90s fridge...
He said the boards always fail and you'll end up with a solid block of ice in the freezer compartment. Sure enough, a customer called last week with a Kenmore that had a 3-inch thick ice sheet behind the panel. Anyone else still manually checking those old defrost timers?

Three inches? That's a whole glacier back there. I can't even imagine the noise that thing was making. Your dad gave you some solid advice, those old control boards are just ticking time bombs.

Tell me about it. We had an old unit that sounded like a jet engine trying to take off from the backyard. My dad kept saying the same thing, that the circuit board was a disaster waiting to happen. He was right, it finally quit on the hottest weekend last summer. Replacing the whole system was a pain but so much quieter now.
