A landlord's complaint about a fridge leak changed my whole defrost routine

They said I was just patching the symptom and pointed at a cracked liner behind the evaporator I'd been missing for 2 years. Now I pull the back panel and check the drain trough for cracks before I ever touch the heater, anyone else run into that on older models?

Honestly, that landlord pointing at the cracked liner is a perfect example of how sometimes the real problem is hiding behind the thing you keep fixing. Tbh, I've seen the same pattern in so many areas, not just appliances. We get so used to treating the symptom that we forget to ask why the symptom keeps coming back in the first place. It's like when your car makes a weird noise and you just turn up the radio instead of checking the tires. That two years you spent patching over a crack you never saw is exactly how most of us live, we just deal with the leak and never look behind the panel. Once you finally see the actual broken piece, it's almost embarrassing how obvious it was, but you had to have someone else point at it first.

Read something similar in a psychology blog about "error blindness," where the brain just stops seeing the thing it's always patching. Makes you wonder how many cracked liners we're all walking past daily.
