Old store ledger taught me more than any price tag could
I found this beat-up ledger from a general store in Vermont, dates from like 1892 to 1894, and the owner let me flip through it before I bought it for $35. The entries are wild, people trading eggs for fabric, paying off debts with firewood, one guy owed 4 cents for two years and they still wrote it off as settled. It made me realize how much we lose when we only care about what something is worth now. A cracked ceramic pitcher next to it was $120 and looked boring, but this paper with ink smudges told a whole town's story. I ended up framing a few pages that had the shopkeeper's little notes in the margin about the weather and who was sick. Has anyone else picked up something plain that turned out to be the best find in the room?

Realizing that ledger tells more about a town than any museum exhibit ever could... it's like we've all gotten so used to looking at the surface of things that we forgot the stories underneath. I see it everywhere now, people pricing old photos based on the frame instead of the faces in them, or tossing a worn out recipe box without ever opening the cards. The stuff we think is junk usually holds the most life, it's just that nobody slows down enough to read it. That shopkeeper's margin notes about snow and fevers, that's the real history, not the dollar amounts. You got the best thing in that shop for thirty five bucks, plain and simple.
