Crossing state lines taught me a trick for locating old stagecoach routes
I was trying to trace a forgotten mail road near the Oklahoma line and every map from the 1870s disagreed. Last week I overlayed a modern topo map with the old township grids and looked for where creek crossings lined up. That turned up two abandoned fords that matched the old route exactly. Has anyone else tried using creek bed shapes to pin down routes that got redrawn? I'm curious if this works outside the southern plains.

Man, my buddy tried that once and ended up finding a sunken wagon wheel instead...
