Just overheard a guy at the store say he never preheats his air fryer

I was grabbing a new basket liner at Target last Tuesday and heard this older guy telling his friend he just tosses frozen chicken in cold and lets it cook from a dead start. He said it saves time and comes out fine. I've always preheated for 3 minutes before anything goes in, but now I'm wondering if I've been wasting energy this whole time. Tried it last night with some frozen tenders at 400 for 12 minutes and they actually got crispy enough. Has anyone else skipped preheat and gotten good results or did I just get lucky?

Wait is this really that deep? Air fryers are just tiny convection ovens with a fan, not exactly the wild west of kitchen gadgets. People act like tossing frozen fries in a basket is some kind of rebellious act, but it's pretty basic cooking.
