Farmer's market kale turned my air fryer into a smoke machine

I picked up a huge bunch of kale from the farmer's market by the park last weekend. Thought it would be great to make some crispy kale chips in my air fryer for a healthy snack. I washed and dried it, tossed it with a little oil and salt, just like the recipe said. Set the air fryer to 375 degrees and popped it in. Within minutes, my kitchen was full of smoke and the kale was black. My next door neighbor came over worried because she saw smoke from the window. I had to open all the doors and windows to clear it out, and now my place smells burnt. I feel pretty dumb for messing up something that seemed so easy. What's the trick to getting kale chips right without setting off every alarm in the building?

Seriously, your neighbor actually came over? That's next-level smoke. I've set off my own alarm before but never had a wellness check. The burnt smell really does stick around for days, doesn't it?

How much kale did you actually try to cook at once? Smoke happens, but making it a big deal for the whole neighborhood seems extra. Kale burns easy if it's not dry or if you use too much oil. Maybe look at the instructions because 375 might be too high for leaves. It's not hard, just use a lower temp and do smaller batches.
