Salvaging a door frame blunder with some extra trim

Yeah the scrap wood trick is a lifesaver when the wall is just totally uneven. How do you keep those strips from shifting around before the trim goes up though, do you tack them in place or just rely on the trim nails to hold everything? I always worry about them slipping while I'm trying to get the trim piece positioned.

During a road trip, a rest stop showed me history in the rocks

That "feel small" thing hits home. I once dug up a perfectly preserved glass milk bottle from the 1940s in my backyard planting tomatoes. It was just sitting there, this thick blue glass. Spent the whole afternoon wondering about the kid who drank from it and if they ever thought about someone finding it decades later. Weird how the past just pokes through like that.

Craving the freedom of my own cabinet shop after years in a safe job

Lots of folks hit this point where the safe choice starts to feel like a trap. I see it all the time, people getting stuck in routines that pay the bills but kill their spirit. The scary part is always the money, no doubt about it. When my friend went freelance, she cut all her extra costs for a year to build a buffer. It seems like the trade-off is short-term comfort for long-term fulfillment, which is a hard sell when rent is due. But watching people make the leap, they often find ways to make it work that they never expected.

Nothing beats finding a thank you note after fixing a stuck elevator

You mentioning that note reminds me of my buddy who does handyman work. He fixed a squeaky door for an elderly neighbor last month. A week later he found a thank you card tucked under his coffee tin on the porch, with a couple homemade cookies wrapped up. He said it made him feel like a superhero for a whole day, you know? Just that little bit of "I see you" stuff.
