Carb cleaner vs. new carb: buddy swore by the spray, cost me a weekend
My old Toro mower started surging bad in June, dying on tall grass. My buddy Lenny said just spray carb cleaner down the throat, no need to take it apart. I did that three times, let it sit overnight each time. Still ran like crap. Finally pulled the bowl off and found the jet clogged with grit. Cleaner never touched that passage. I wasted two Saturdays and about $9 in spray. Lenny still insists I did it wrong, says I needed to soak the whole carb. I bought a $28 replacement carb online and it fired up first pull. So which is it, is a spray can ever enough or do you guys always pull the bowl first? Has anyone actually fixed a surging mower with just cleaner and no disassembly?
