Tried a new texturizing paste on a client's fine hair and it went totally flat

I had a client with super fine, straight hair who wanted a piecey, messy look. I grabbed a new 'strong hold' texturizing paste from a brand I hadn't tried before. I worked it through her damp hair, then diffused it like I always do. After about 20 minutes, her hair just fell completely flat and felt weirdly sticky. I think the paste was too heavy for her hair type and the formula just didn't dry right. Anyone have a good texturizing product for fine hair that actually holds without weighing it down?

Ugh, been there. I once used a "lightweight" cream that made my own fine hair look like I hadn't washed it for a week. Have you tried a salt spray or a mousse first for volume, then just a tiny bit of a dry texture powder at the roots? That combo usually works for me without the sticky mess.

Wait, a texture powder? That's a real thing? I always thought that was just fancy talk for dry shampoo. You're telling me there's a whole separate product you sprinkle on like magic fairy dust for volume? My mind is kind of blown. I've been over here wrestling with sticky gels like a chump.
