My barrel went for a flight during a simple fit check

I now triple-check my vise setup after that lesson. It sailed across the room and dented my shop radio.

I started putting a thin copper jaw insert in my vise after a similar scare. The soft metal grips way better and doesn't mar the finish at all. I mean, it's cheap insurance and now I don't even worry about it slipping.

Copper inserts are okay, but that heavy barrel torque needs more than soft jaws. A proper barrel block in the receiver is the only thing that really locks it down for me.
