Just found out the original M1 Garand gas cylinder plug was made with a left-hand thread, which explains a lot about that one stubborn one I fought with for an hour yesterday.
I was reading through an old Army technical manual from 1943 in the shop's back room and that little detail about the left-hand thread on the early plugs just clicked, making me feel a bit silly for all the force I was applying the wrong way.

Oh man, that'll get you every time! I learned that lesson the hard way too, with a lot of cussing and a chewed-up wrench. For the future, a little dab of penetrating oil on the threads and a solid whack on the wrench handle with a rubber mallet usually breaks it free. Just remember, lefty-tighty on that old plug.
