My grandpa told me to always measure a window three times before cutting. I thought he was just being old school.
Last Tuesday I was in a rush on a job in Springfield and only measured twice. I cut a 36 inch by 48 inch tempered piece for a bathroom window. When I went to install it, it was a full quarter inch too short on the height. The homeowner's cat was watching me the whole time, and I swear it looked disappointed. I had to eat the cost of the glass and start over. Has anyone else had a simple piece of advice come back to bite them like that?

Ugh, that's the worst feeling. I did almost the same thing with a custom mirror. Now I write down each measurement in big numbers on the wall right next to the opening, and I physically point at the number on the tape and then at my note. Sounds silly, but it forces me to actually look.

Honestly, that's a genius system. I should probably adopt it, because my current method is just squinting at the tape measure and hoping my brain decides to work that day. I once cut a board three separate times and it was still too short, which is a special kind of failure. Your pointing trick might be the only thing that saves me from myself.
