A customer in Tampa asked me why we call it 'float glass' and my answer was stupid
I was finishing a storefront install last week and the owner, this older guy, just pointed at the big pane and asked, 'So why is it called float glass?' I gave the usual quick line about it floating on molten tin. He looked at me and said, 'Yeah, but why tin? Why not just pour it on a table like syrup?' I had to admit I never really thought about it. I went home and looked it up, and the whole process with the tin bath making it perfectly flat and smooth is way cooler than I made it sound. I've been doing this for eight years and just gave the most boring answer possible. Anyone else have a simple question from a client that made you realize you should know your own trade better?
