Cracking open geodes for shelf decor showed me how rocks tell time

I had some geodes from a trip and thought they'd look nice in my living room. After carefully breaking them, the inside crystals were stunning under the lamp light. A quick search taught me that geodes start as bubbles in lava that slowly fill with minerals. It takes so long for those crystals to grow, which blows my mind. Now I'm grouping them by color and formation type on my bookshelf. This simple decorating idea turned into a cool way to learn about geology. I keep pointing out the different mineral patterns to anyone who visits.

Geodes are like natural clocks, recording millennia in their crystals. It's wild to hold that much time in your hands.

Right, @the_alice totally gets how mind-blowing that feels.
